The First Church of Christ, Scientist literally stands on Congregational foundations.ย Apart from the fact that the denominationโ€™s founder, Mary Baker Eddy, was born into a Congregational family, the current building is sited on what was originally intended to be a new church for the Independents worshipping in Hindmarsh Square.ย Building work wasย stopped due to a legal challenge.ย The unfinished building remained derelict for some years before the First Church of Christ, Scientist, whichย had been occupying premises in Wakefield Street, Adelaideย purchased it in 1939.ย It was 1953 before they were able to begin building a structure far less expensive than the original design.

The buildingย cost ยฃ75ย 000 and was designed by Louis Laybourne Smithย to hold 360 peopleย with a Sunday school in the basement capable of holding 300.ย A marble porch and a 21.3m long foyerย formed an impressive entrance to the new church.ย A reading room had a separate entrance fromย Tavistockย Street (laterย renamed Frome Road).
