7th Battalion
The 7th Battalion stands as one of the first assembled for the Australian Infantry Force during the First World War. Raised within a fortnight of the declaration of war in August 1914, the Battalion was lead by Lieutenant Colonel H.E. “Pompey” Elliott. Two months after formation, the Battalion was shipped out to Egypt and became part of the second wave of the ANZAC landing on 25 April 1915. In March 1916, the Battalion was deployed to France and the Western Front after the ANZAC withdrawal from Gallipoli. Following the Battalions conflicts at Menin Road and Broodseinde as part of the Ypres offensive of 1917, the Battalion remained on the Western Front until the November armistice.
