History of Immigration and Settlement

Uruguayans first came to Australia in significant numbers in the 1960s and 1970s. They came to South Australia in response to a worsening economy and political repression.

Statistics

The 1986 census recorded that there were 116 Uruguayan-born South Australians.

According to the 1991 census there were 112. 127 people said that their mothers were born in Uruguay and 129 that their fathers were.

According to the 1996 census there were 116 Uruguayan-born South Australians, this represents 1.2 per cent of the national total.

The 2001 census recorded 123 Uruguayan-born South Australians, while 60 people said that they were of Uruguayan descent.

The 2006 census recorded 127 Uruguayan-born South Australians, while 73 people said that they were of Uruguayan descent.

The 2011 census recorded 129 Uruguayan-born South Australians, while 95 people said that they were of Uruguayan descent.

The 2016 census recorded 129 Uruguayan-born South Australians, with 106 people saying they were of Uruguayan descent.
