A time ball on the tower of the first harbors board building indicatedย accurate time for ship captains to set their chronometers (marine clocks). At three minutes to 12:00 the Adelaide observatory telegraphedย a clerk who hoistedย a canvas ball to the top of an iron rod. At midday a magnetic signal was sent via telegraph line releasing the ball โvisible to ships in harbor.
