The first copper smelter, Adelaide Smelting Company, was built at the Port in 1849. The colony breathed a sigh of relief. Previously all South Australian ore was shipped all the way to Wales for treatment. In 1861, the English and Australian Copper Company fired up smelters in new, larger premises on bank of the Port River.
