The Electric Light and Motive Power Company established a power house on Nile Street in 1899, providing power to Port Adelaide. Small by today’s standards the plant was the first to electrify street lights in South Australia. There were still some challenges, Mr Dexter had to walk the streets twice-nightly with a long rod to flick a switch high on each light pole.
