The Overway Bridge, built in 1868, enabled people and goods going to and from North Adelaide to cross the railway lines. To the frustration of locals, the original Overway Bridge was demolished in 1880 and a level crossing reinstated. Four years later it was replaced with a lattice girder bridge extending over North Terrace west and the railway yards in line with Morphett Street and the Victoria Bridge.
