Successive governors used a summer residence in the Adelaide Hills to escape from the heat of the Adelaide Plains. The first, Old Government House, was built in 1860 in the present Belair National Park. This was superseded by a larger residence at Marble Hill. After this was destroyed in the Black Sunday Bushfires of 1955 the governor was no longer provided with a summer residence.
