HomeThe General Post Office is constructed

Incorporating the Telegraph Station, the General Post Office was constructed opposite the Adelaide Town Hall between 1867 and 1872. It featured a large public hall with a decorative cast iron balustrade around a gallery. The foundation stone for Victoria Tower was laid in 1867 but the clock, bells and dial facings were not installed until 1875.
