Horse-drawn trams, which had been established in 1878, were replaced with electric trams in 1909. In 1958 the electric trams were removed from King William Street to allow for the unimpeded flow of motor buses and cars. A renewed emphasis on public transport at the beginning of the twenty-first century saw trams reintroduced on King William Street north of Victoria Square.
