HomePlacesJane Street

In the late nineteenth century Jane Street was a community where teetotallers mixed with drinkers and smokers despite public debates about prohibition. In 2003 students from Flinders University excavated the South Australian Maritime Museum’s car park to uncover the remains of two cottages. They found building footings and thousands of artefacts: crockery, toys, bones, bottles and household goods form the families that lived there between the 1850s and 1890s.
