Edward Wright left his mark in the fabric of our city, he was one of our most successful early architects. He won many competitions for building designs, some featured here, often in partnership with other architects. Wright also argued publicly for the use of Italianate design in our mediterranean climate. This tour visits some of his most well-known buildings in the heart of the City of Adelaide, with stories told by Keith Conlon, chair of the South Australian Heritage Council

Adelaide's GPO building was the tallest building in the city until well into the 20th century, and remains a significant landmark to this day.

141 King William St, Adelaide SA 5000, Australia

The classically styled freestone Adelaide General Post Office housed both the post and telegraph offices which connected South Australia with the world.

Edmund Wright won not one but two competitions for an Adelaide Town Hall design. The second one, with partner EJ Woods, was given the go-ahead by Council.

15 Pirie St, Adelaide SA 5000, Australia

The classically inspired Adelaide Town Hall was opened in 1866 and accommodates council chambers and civic reception rooms. It remains a notable landmark in Adelaide today.

Architect Edmund Wright's love of Italian inspired designs for the South Australian climate is on full display in the former Bank of Adelaide building.

This building at 81 King William Street was home to the Bank of Adelaide from its opening in 1880. A competition was held for its design, and won by Edmund William Wright.

Edmund Wright House was built in 1878 as the headquarters of the Bank of South Australia.

While Edmund Wright's real legacy survives in the buildings he designed, he is also honoured with a plaque in his name on North Terrace.
