Commonweath Hostels Limited was responsible for the management and andministration of migrant hostels around Australia. The organisation was established in 1951 by the Department of Labour and National Service, which had run migrant hostels directly prior to that time.
In 1967 Commonwealth Hostels Limited described themselves as:
… a non-profit making company set up by the Australian Government to operate hostels and guest houses throughout Australia for a wide variety of people.
Name change and Winding Down
In 1978 the organisation became Commonwealth Accommodation and Catering Services (CACS). By this time it had already been providing catering and accommodation services to other non-migrant government facilities, as well as to the Commonwealth hostels.
