The Arctic Convoys were a company of ships that sailed with vital supplies from the United Kingdom, Iceland, and North Ameirca to ports in the Soviet Union; namely Arkhangelsk (Archangel) and Murmansk. During the period of August 1941and May 1945 there were 78 convoys that sailed through the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. 

The memorial inscription reads:

ARCTIC CONVOY VETERANS
SOUTH AUSTRALIA –  EST. 1990
Commemorating the Veterans of this Association and the many fellow mariners who lost their lives in action, who, while serving in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Artillery Maritime Unit and the Merchant Navy, played their part in fighting-through many convoys to the North Russian ports of Murmansk and Archangel. These deliveries of vital supplies and equipment to beleagured Russia, in the period August 1941 to May 1945, contributed significantly to the defeat of Nazi Germany
