Sarah Allott was the Mayoress of Adelaide (married to the Mayor) between 1873-1874.
Early Life
Sarah Allott née Smith was born in 1818 at Bucknell, Staffordshire, England. On 18 January 1843, she married William Dixon Allott in Honley, Yorkshire. Two children are known to have been born while the couple were still living in England: Lucy Ann in 1845, and Robert in 1847.
It appears the family paid their own way to South Australia, arriving in early 1854 aboard the Luconia.
Two more children were born in South Australia: Adelaide Mary in 1856, and Alice Harriet in 1858.
William was a chemist. He set up business first in Leigh Street, Adelaide, and later in Rundle Street, where he carried on business for 40 years.
Contributions/Achievements
William was the son of a Congregational Minister, and the couple were active members of the Congregational Church in Hindmarsh Square.
William was elected to the City Council in 1869 and was Mayor of Adelaide from 1873 to 1874.
Personal Note
Sarah died at Glenelg in 1882, aged 64. William died in 1892, aged 75. Sarah and William are buried in West Terrace Cemetery.
