A chapel was constructed on the north side of Grote Street for the Church of Christ congregation led by Thomas Magarey. The low building, with its plain stucco façade and belfry, was opened on 14 December 1856. A Sunday school was built to the rear and east of the church in the mid 1880s. It was demolished in 1940.

The reading of the first proclamation was first commemorated when the colony was judged to have ‘come of age’. Thereafter some commemoration has been held each year on 28 December.
